6th Workshop on Auditing and Financial Accounting Research

University of Vaasa on October 4–5, 2012

PhD students and others interested in auditing and financial accounting research are very welcome to the AFAR workshop in Vaasa! The first AFAR workshop was held in Vaasa year 2002, so now is the 10 year anniversary event. As before, the goal is to gather PhD students and others interested in the area, to make contacts and to discuss our research papers.

The topic scope is intended to be broad and includes research about all fields of financial accounting and auditing research. The AFAR workshop is open to doctoral students as well as more established researchers. PhD students can submit a paper either to a work-in-progress (WiP) session or to a working paper session (WP). Papers presented at the WiP sessions can be research plans as well as papers with preliminary results. Papers submitted to WP sessions should be more developed papers. Post doctoral researchers can only submit papers to WP sessions.

The deadline for submission of an abstract is August 15th and the deadline for registration and submission of full papers is September 1st. Abstracts and papers should be sent as an e-mail attachment to anu.airaksinen(at)student.uwasa.fi (preferably in pdf format). All working papers accepted for presentation will be published in AFAR workshop conference proceedings. Persons not planning to present are also welcome to participate. Experienced researchers may be asked to act as a discussant.

The best working paper (WP) presented at the workshop written by a doctoral candidate will be awarded. In celebration of the tenth anniversary event, we have raised the prize to 700 EUR.

The AFAR workshop keynote speakers will be Professor Marco Trombetta and Professor Marleen Willekens.

Trombetta is professor of accounting and management control at Instituto de Empresa Business School, Madrid. His main research area is financial accounting but he has also done auditing related research. Professor Trombetta is the vice dean of research at IE Business School, a member of Ph.D Committees. He has also been at the Assistant Editor of the European Accounting Review, the official journal of the European Accounting Association, and is currently at the Editorial Board of the journal. He will give a speech about publishing in international journals.

Willekens is professor of financial accounting and auditing at KU Leuven. Professor Willekens conducts mainly research in auditing, covering topics such as audit pricing, the quality of external auditing, business risk auditing, auditor regulation and liability, and earnings management. Professor Willekens has been the organizer of the EARNet PhD workshops for several years. She will give a speech about research opportunities in auditing.
